This page contains rulings on a number of niche gameplay disputes that may come up during gameplay.
A check I’m trying to make does not state it’s difficulty threshold. How am I supposed to figure out the threshold?
Unless otherwise stated or modified, all difficulties are made at a default threshold of 6. See Rolling Dice for more information.
What counts as a success if the difficulty of a check is above 10?
There are many traits, debuffs, and circumstances that may push the difficulty threshold of a check above 10. In instances such as these, only a 10 on the dice roll counts as a success.
How many 10s count as 1 success scales with difficulties above 10. This is done so at a rate of +1 success/every point above 10. For example at difficulty 11, you must roll 2 10s in order to obtain 1 success. At 12 you must roll 3 10s in order to obtain 1 success and so on.
If the Storyteller declares one of my rolls a botch using one of my flaws do I get a refund on any Willpower I spent on the roll?
No. If the Storyteller declares one of your rolls a botch using a trait ( such as Dark Fate) you do not get a refund on any willpower used on the roll. This is meant to make these high value flaws more punishing.
Can the Storyteller declare my initiative roll a botch using one of my flaws?
No. This is because initiative rolls are not a normal action roll. This is the same reason why willpower and wound penalties don’t affect the initiative roll.
However, Storyteller can declare your rolls to avoid ambush or a mid-sleep attack (Alertness +Perception) as a botch. This will result in you beginning combat stunned on turn 1 and having the final initiative turn 2.
